Best Made Axes
I like these axes. I like them a lot. It was Cookie’s recent post on his blog, Made in England, that brought them to my attention. Well I guess it re-brought them to my attention, Kate reminded me that I had seen them recently on the cover of Uppercase Magazine. Apparently I hadn’t looked closely enough at that Uppercase issue to realize that these axes were more than ordinary. They’re hand-crafted, hand-painted, hand-detailed from Peter Buchanan-Smith and Graeme Cameron’s Best Made Company. Each axe features a slogan and logo stamped into in the handle and comes with a full-set of embroidered patches that carry the axes’ messages. You probably can’t see it very well on the image below, but the handle features the word “fortitude” stamped into it. How great is that? Others have singular words like “courage”, “grace”, and “compassion” stamped into their handles.
They aren’t cheap. The current line is selling for $250. Their back catalog axes have sold for as much as $500. I say “sold” because they’re sold out of the back catalog. It makes me think of Vanilla Bike’s 5-year waiting list for a bike. The art of branding applied to craft is perhaps the most potent business model there is. I could say more on that subject, but I think I’ll leave that for another post. So, go check out the Best Made Company’s website and find yourself a new favorite axe.
